Onboarding, the reading screen and 60 badge icons
Bramble’s app was built for parents and used by kids. Nine months on Double Twist redesigned the parts kids touch most: getting started, reading and earning badges.

What they asked for
Bramble helps children aged 6 to 9 read on their own, with books matched to their level. The app worked, but it looked like a dashboard for parents. Kids got lost at sign-up, and the reading screen was mostly buttons.
Jonah Weiss, the product lead, started with onboarding: “A seven-year-old should be able to get from the app icon to page one without asking for help.”
What we made
A new onboarding flow: one question per screen and a “Who’s reading?” picker with big avatars.
A reading screen with large type, tap-to-hear words and a single page-turn gesture.
A badge system with rules for shape, color and size, plus 60 badges.
An end-of-book celebration and a weekly streak screen.
App store screenshots and a parent-facing settings area.
How the subscription ran
Double Twist, so two requests ran at once: usually one screen flow and one batch of badges. Lou led the product design and Hana drew the badges. Every second week, Jonah tested new screens with a group of kids and brought back notes. We turned those notes into the next requests and adjusted the brief each time. The weekly 30-minute call that comes with the plan was where those notes landed.
Where it landed
Bramble shipped the new onboarding and reading screen in two releases. Badge requests are still going: Jonah sends a theme and we send back a set of six.

“Our kids’ app finally looks like it was made for kids.”
